The Barbers Play - The Baptism of Christ

Members of St Paul's Church, Heslington, in the Baptism of Christ waggon play, 2002

performed by St Paul's Church, Heslington, York

Here we meet John the Baptist, a voice in the wilderness calling humanity to repent and to prepare for the coming Messiah. As Jesus comes to seek baptism himself, John is fearful and confused. Jesus gently teaches of the importance of baptism and of his own need to be cleansed from sin as he prepares to commence his active ministry. John baptises Jesus and holy spirit descends upon him.

"The mystery plays were a desire to participate in the religious understanding of human life, and in each episode is an attempt to see the good news and grace of God."
